Time to think green for climate change

Environmental organisations are inviting Assembly Members to focus on the environment in November, as part of a series of ‘Environment Focus’ events going on across Wales.

In the run up to the crucial UN Climate Conference in Copenhagen in December, organisations ranging from RSPB Cymru to Keep Wales Tidy and WWF Cymru - under the umbrella of Wales Environment Link (WEL) - will be hosting a range of events to highlight policy priorities, and to develop ideas on how best to secure a sustainable future for Wales.

Ruth Lovell, WEL member said: “At a time when public service funding is being cut it may appear to be the wrong time to be investing more in our environment. However, we want to show how improving our environment can bring benefits in all areas from health and wellbeing to education, and can also help create jobs and attract investment.”

Mick Bates AM, Chair of the Sustainability Committee, who will be hosting one of the main Environment Focus events said: “With the Copenhagen climate change conference on the horizon, the ‘Environment Focus’ session is a great opportunity for Assembly members to find out more about the environment, at a key time when taking action to tackle climate change is high on the agenda in Wales, Westminster and Worldwide.”

WEL is hoping that bringing the environment into focus during this period will help highlight the importance of a more sustainable Wales, and that investment in the environment now will benefit our children in so many ways in the future.

The ‘Environment Focus’ session hosted by Mick Bates AM will take place on Wednesday 11 November from 9am until 1pm in the National Assembly for Wales building, Ty Hywel (Dining room 3).

There will be hourly slots where a number of different policy specialists from at least 10 of WEL’s national member organisations will be available to discuss a range of key environmental issues including marine, waste, sustainable development, green exercise, biodiversity and climate change.
