Plans for Ferndale's future go on show

Ferndale’s residents and business people have been given an insight into the town’s future at a public exhibition.

Following the announcement that a further £675,000 has been secured from the Heads of the Valleys programme to regenerate the town centre, a number of exciting plans went on public display in October.

People were able to view proposals that include public realm works outside the Anchor Hotel and the library to create modern, attractive environments, and the creation of a pedestrian link between the Lime Street Car Park and Lake Street.

Council officers were on hand to answer questions, and throughout the week over 200 people attended the exhibition. Many of those that attended provided feedback, with public comments being supportive, saying that the public realm works ‘would visually enhance the town’ and suggesting they would be ‘a good development’.

It is hoped all work carried out as a result of this further funding boost will complement the extensive regeneration that has already taken place, in order to deliver the vision for the town centre as an attractive and prosperous place for residents, businesses and visitors alike.

Councillor Paul Cannon, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Housing, said:

“Ferndale continues to be a priority for us in terms of regenerating town centres in Rhondda Cynon Taf. This further Heads of the Valleys funding will enable us to carry out more improvements and build upon the progress already made.

“The involvement of the public is very important and through consultation events such as the exhibition, we can ensure that we actually deliver what people want.”

Ferndale Councillor, Annette Davies, who attended the exhibition, said:

“I was very pleased that Ferndale residents had the opportunity to give the Council their views on the proposed next phase of work in the town. Ferndale has already benefited considerably from the investment it has received, which is set to continue with the plans that people have been able to see for themselves.

“We have already delivered a more attractive street environment and want to continue this positive change so that residents, shoppers, and local businesses all benefit.”

Fellow Ferndale Member, Councillor Ceri Jones, added:

“I was delighted with the positive response received from residents who attended the recent exhibition at Trerhondda Chapel. The link from the car park through Lake Street will enable motorists easier access to the shops and opening up the area in front of the Library / Wesley House Day Centre will vastly improve the area for pedestrians.

“The regeneration of Ferndale continues to improve the town with the Strand area soon to be completed and I will continue to keep residents informed of future developments."

Work on these proposals is set to be complete by April 2010.
